International Museum Day is celebrated annually on 18 May and aims to raise awareness of the role of museums in the development of society and culture. This day was established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977 and has since become an important event for everyone involved in museums.

The main goal of International Museum Day is to draw public attention to the importance of museums in the preservation of cultural heritage, education, research and the development of creativity. It is also a day to highlight the role of museums in the social, cultural and economic development of countries and societies.

Each year, International Museum Day is dedicated to a specific theme that reflects current issues and challenges that museums face. For example, themes may include issues of preservation of cultural heritage, inclusiveness, innovation in museum practice, accessibility and digitalization of collections.
